"Dinner Club" — "Dining Club" — "Occasional Supper Club": Whatever you call this
phenomenon, it's a terrific opportunity for solo visitors to Paris!
"In spite of the ups and downs, the variation in the quality, there is something brave
and almost reckless about this trend toward dining clubs or occasional restaurants . . . It suggests, in their
intimacy and singularity, a whiff of danger, a hunger for a more promiscuous kind of dinner party." The New
York Times Style Magazine — Spring 2005
Since late summer 2002, David Tanis (Six months of the year he is the hed chef at Chez Panisse in Berkely,
California.) has hosted an "occasional" lunch or dinner eating club in a 17th century apartment on Paris'
Left Bank. (Menus are based upon the best of what is seasonally available in the Paris markets.)
William Morrow is slated to publish Tanis' cookbook tentatively entitled, "A Platter of Figs."
Once or twice a week, 12 guests join around a long table to meet, dine and converse.
You may book the entire table with a party of twelve, or you may join the table as a single diner, couple,
or small group. A typical gathering might include a few Americans on holiday, a few Parisian ex-pats, a few local
French folks, and the odd celebrity or two.
Co-hosts, Arturo, a wire-haired fox terrier and Ajax, a Chesapeake Bay retriever inspired the dinner club's
name: Aux Chiens Lunatiques ("At the crazy dogs' place") — in the traditions of Parisian bistros
like Le Chien Qui Fume ("the dog who smokes").
Dinners cost from 45 euros (without wines) to 65 or 75 euros with wines.
