List of Restaurants Offering Communal Dining Tables
Did you catch the following provocative article? March 31, 2014 The Atlantic
Alone Together: The Return of Communal Restaurant Tables:
As more establishments seat people in close proximity, friendships are not forged.
Tried twice no success to weigh in on their website with a comment. Here it is:
And it doesnt feel very elegant to rub elbows with your tablemates when youre cutting into a $50 filet mignon
in a fancy dining room. Possibly ;-)
People attending special events, like big-bucks wine tasting dinners, are enthusiastic communal dining participants.
Might the difference have something to do with the fact that introductions are made prior to the main event?
Additionally, does anyone remember when NYCs Asia de Cubas 25-foot-long table seating 36 made the scene 15 years
ago? A hallmark of staff training was the routine introduction of cheek-by-jowl guests as one was being served.
Potential ice-breaker? Sure --- when peeps were so inclined. Recall the counter/bar of D.C.s Red Sage? Same-same
except the staff made introductions upon seating guests.
Hey --- if communal dining aint your thing, rather than bitch about the phenomenon, why not avoid restaurants
steeped in them.

Considering taking the plunge dining at a communal table?
S. Irene Virbilia, Los Angeles Times restaurant critic's communal dining commentaries may be just
the encouragement you need.
Here is an except from her Critic's Choice "The communal table experience" 9/15/11
"The trend now, especially in casual restaurants, is the communal table. Granted, it also means a small
restaurant can seat more people, but sitting at the communal table can be surprising and fun. You never know what
might happen. You might be seated next to someone perfectly awful. You might make a new friend. You might end up
sharing a bottle of phenomenal wind. You won't be bored."
Here are excepts from her 12/3/06 review of Canelé in Atwater Village (323) 666-7133 3219 Glendale Boulevard:
" . . . I end up sitting at the communal table in the front window. Twice it was because there was
no other table available and my friends and I didn't want to wait.
But now I tend to gravitate to one end of the broad farmhouse table set with vases filed with herbs. I like sitting
down to dinner without feeling locked into a tiny two-top. Sometimes you see familiar faces. But mostly you don't
and that's a big part of the appeal the sense of a shared experience with new acquaintances.
Someone will wonder what it is you're eating or ask for a recommendatiom. Someone else will lean close conspiratorially
and tell you to order the heirloom tomatoes with olives, cucumbers and feta. I do. And it is delicious . . .
Because the communal table sitters tend to be self-selected group, people are often more sociable and they linger.
Over wine. Over coffee. Over the beguiling buena chica cheesecake.
From this comforting wooden table on the sidelines, you can take in the entire scene at Canelé."
